Town wall tablet, Johnston Terrace
Town wall tablet, Johnston Terrace
Tablet indicating the approximate spot where the old town wall, after rising up the slope from the West Port in the Grassmarket, terminated at the Castle Rock. It is popularly called the Flodden Wall because of its extension after that battle in 1513, though, as the plaque makes clear, a wall existed from at least the reign of James II (1437-60), if not earlier. At the Castle the wall abutted an outlying defensive spur which once protruded into the south-west corner of the area covered by the present Esplanade (see the Gordon of Rothiemay map, 1647).
