Fields New Road
Fields New Road
Archetypal northern industrial town scenery - terraced houses with a textile mill looming in the background. The elements of this photo that show that it is from the modern era are a) the factory chimney has been shortened -it would have had a decorative cap, b) the lack of chimney pots on the housing and c) the speed hump on the road.
Despite the serried ranks of terraced houses, this road predates the urbanisation of the area.
Raven Mill
Built to the designs of P. S. Stott in 1905, the tower shows the influence of the Art Nouveau style of the period. Although the chimney, slightly truncated, remains, the engine house has disappeared. The engine was of 1500 hp, by Buckley and Taylor.
Generally the fabric of this mill remains in good condition, probably due to the fact that it remains in single-ownership. It is the returns centre for a large international mail-order organisation.
