Belgrave Mills :: SD9303
Probably the largest single-site complex of mills in Oldham, it finally consisted of four separate mills. No.1, the original 1881 mill fronts Fitton Hill Road, with a later small extension onto Honeywell Lane. This part of the site is still occupied by various businesses. This was followed by No.2 mill, further east along Fitton Hill Road, which was a typical Stott mill. When visited in June 2010, the first stages of demolition of this building were under way. The tower does however support cellphone transmitters, so maybe it will survive. Both No.1 and 2 mills were steam powered. Next east is No.3 mill, built as an electric mill. This is still in occupation and has been recently re-roofed. To the north of this is No.4 mill, also electric from the outset, built in 1914. This too survives as industrial premises, retaining its smart tower at the west end.
Maple Mill :: SD9303
This is a double mill, but consisting of two independent blocks rather than a large symmetrical building. Both mills are to the design of P.S.Stott, No.1 mill was built in 1904 and No.2 in 1915 to a very similar design. Both were spinning mule mills. Interestingly, the engines driving each mill were very different, that for No.1 being a vertical triple expansion unit of 1000hp by Saxon, that for No.2 being an 1800hp horizontal by Urmson and Thompson.
On April 21, 2009, No.2 Mill suffered a disastrous fire which resulted in the destruction of the bulk of the structure. In June 2010 only the western facade with its tower and the engine house survived; the rest was just a huge pile of rubble.
