SN0732 : "Battle of the Preselau"

taken 8 years ago, 3 km from Rosebush, Pembrokeshire/Sir Benfro, Great Britain

"Battle of the Preselau"
"Battle of the Preselau"
Plaque at the car park at the western end of the Preseli ridge commemorating the resolve of the local population, organised in the Prescelly Preservation Committee, who resisted the takeover of the Preseli by the military as a training range in 1948.

The name of the ridge has had a number of spelling variants over the years. Nowadays, 'Preseli' is most common in both Welsh and English use. 'Preselau' suggests a plural, similar to the 'Carneddau' in Snowdonia, although unlike Carnedd Dafydd and Llewelyn, there are no individual peaks named 'Presel' here. The anglicised variant 'Prescelly' is antiquated now.
