On the night of 22nd October 1707, four Royal Navy warships from a fleet of 20 under the command of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell went down on the Western Rocks with the loss of over 2,000 lives. Shovell's flagship The Association, The Eagle, Firebrand and Romney were wrecked with only 26 survivors. This 18 pound bronze French cannon was most likely a trophy from the siege of Toulon in 1707. It was recovered from the wreck of The Association in 1970.
