The houses are situated on Thorpe Esplanade. The Southend district of Thorpe Bay was known as plain 'Thorpe' until the London Tilbury & Southend Railway opened a station called 'Thorpe Bay' there in 1884. This was done in order to make what had been a fairly bleak stretch of coastline seem more enticing to the well-off commuters the Company hoped to (and indeed did) attract. But as this image shows the bay was not entirely a fiction of the LTSR's imagination.
