The start of the Ashby Canal at Marston Junction, Warwickshire
The start of the Ashby Canal at Marston Junction, Warwickshire
Seen from below the first bridge, which carries the towpath of the Coventry Canal, and the number 15 (Coventry Canal). The single boat width here would have assisted in the collection of tolls. Both canals are on the same level here at Marston Junction.

Opened in 1804, this 22 mile lock free canal originally went as far north as Conkers (near Moira), and never reached Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Coal was carried on a regular commercial basis until the 1960s. At present the canal stops at Snarestone, though the extra eight mile stretch to Moira is being (or has been) restored. We all anticipate its opening in the not too distant future.
