Merchiston outcrop
Merchiston outcrop
This photo demonstrates how a tower house would usually be built on a natural outcrop of rock to provide both a solid foundation for the heavy masonry and an added element of defence at the base of the tower. The ground level here will have been raised when the tower was restored.
