Black-tailed Skimmer in Castle Marsh
On this warm day in early July the footpath > LinkExternal link is teeming with insects such as beetles, bees, flies and butterflies > LinkExternal link as well as dragonflies and damselflies > LinkExternal link. [Many thanks to Hugh Venables for help with identification.]

Dragonflies eat mosquitoes and other insects like flies, bees, ants, and butterflies. They have large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. The insects are extremely manoeuvrable in flight, with flight muscles that can adjust stroke-frequency, amplitude, phase between forewings and hindwings and angle of attack - independently for each of the four wings. Depending on the angle of attack they also use a variety of lift-inducing mechanisms.
