The two brick buildings now supply the natural gas.
Beccles Gasworks
The Gas Works belonged to Mr James Malam, and was erected in 1837. There was a gas-holder of 10,000 cubic feet supplying 108 street lamps, paid for by the Corporation.
The works was licensed to supply gas not only to the people Beccles, but also to Barsham, Gillingham Geldeston, Ringsfield and Worlingham.
Beccles Water & Gas Company, formed in 1854, was incorporated by an Act of Parliament passed also in 1854. They purchased the old gasworks for 3500 from Mr Samuel Brown of Birmingham. With the new capital the gasworks was expanded in 1894.

In 1893 the price of gas to private consumers was 4s 4d per
1,000 cubic feet. By agreement with the Urban Sanitary Authority, the ordinary public lamps were lit from sunset to 11 p.m. at 1d per night. Some lights were lit all night at 4d per lamp per night for 10 months of the year.
By 1900 the price was 4s 8d per 1,000 feet of gas.

In 1951 Mr E W Swindells, manager of the coal depot has reported in the Beccles and Bungay that coal stocks were low. Only 4 cwt per household could be delivered up to the end of February. Thomas Moy Ltd, of Beccles railway station said their stocks were exhausted. The Gas works, which usually held 6 weeks supply of coal only had sufficient for two weeks. Coal came from the rail network, the railway (Waveney Valley Railway) ran close by until 1964.
