William Gladstone Monument, Coates Crescent Gardens
William Gladstone Monument, Coates Crescent Gardens
Statue of the statesman William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98), surrounded by eight bronze figures, the work of the Scottish sculptor James Pittendrigh MacGillivray (1856-1938). Originally intended for Coates Crescent, it had to be resited following residents' objections, much to the chagrin of the artist. It was unveiled in 1917 in the roadway on the east side of St Andrew Square, but was moved to this spot in 1955 after it was judged to be causing increased traffic congestion. Gladstone now looks out onto Shandwick Place.
