River Wear at Stanhope
The R. Wear seen from a footbridge on the S. side of the town in a state of unusually low water, looking upstream - i.e. to the W. At the limit of the water there appears to be a series of crenellations; that is a set of stepping stones beside a ford; that ford has some local notoriety as in states of high water vehicles have been swept from it by the flow. The ford is now closed to traffic through the winter months and there was even a suggestion that it be closed entirely. (The footbridge from which the photo was taken appears not to be marked clearly, or even at all, on Landranger maps.)
