Further up-river from Kinlough Link is the C16 tower at Shrule that commands the bridge over the Black River on the Mayo border. It belonged to the chief of the MacWilliam Burke lochtair family, who in 1570 came to relieve it during an attack by the Lord President of Connacht, and the Earl of Clanricarde. The walls are almost 9 feet thick at the battered base where part of a C13 hall house have been incorporated. This reduces to a thickness of a "mere" five feet at the third storey level. The corners above the base are splayed off, rising to similarly splayed corner bartizans at the summit.
