Merton College gatehouse
Merton College gatehouse
Raising one's eyes above the entrance brings into view this fine crenellated tower above the lodge.
Although the gatehouse dates originally from around 1418 when the building of the battlements required a royal 'license to crenellate' from Henry V, it was reconstructed in the C19 with the original C15 carved panel SP5106 : Carved panel above Merton College entrance, and its flanking statues, reset.
