Making the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan is not, of course, a new experience for British people, as this memorial testifies.

To the Honored Memory of Captain John Woodburn - 44th Bengal Native Infantry and Commandant of the 5th Disciplined Hindostanee Regiment of Infantry, in the Service of His Majesty the late Shah Soojah-Ool-Moolk - who nobly Fell at the Head of a Small Band of Devoted Followers, in Action with an Overpowering Number of Ghilzie Insurgents, near Ghuznee in Affghanistan on the 4th of November 1841. This Cenotaph has been Erected by the Surviving British Officers of that Service, Friends and Companions in Arms, who Deeply Lamenting his Untimely Fate - Knew and Admired his Great Skill as a Soldier, his Sterling Worth and Honesty as a Man.

And below: In Proud and Everlasting Remembrance of John Woodburn Gillan. Wing-Commander, Royal Air Force, D.F.C. and Bar A.F.C. Great Grand Nephew of Above, who was Lost in the Channel after an Air Battle in August 1941, who is Buried in Dunkirk.
