Arosfa Hotel
A detail photo of this hotel on Gower Street. Apart from the nice flowers in the window box, the signs caught my attention. The black sign on the right quotes the hotel telephone number as Museum 2115 and therefore pre-dates the introduction of All Figure Numbering (called all figure dialling on wikipedia) in the uk which began in 1966 and is generally referred to within BT as AFN. This came about as the possibilities of providing meaningful exchange codes for the number ranges available were becoming very limited. The numbers for MUSeum should have been 687 rather than the 636 that was actually the case. Turning to the brass plaque on the left we find the hotel's phone number quoted as 0171-636-2115. Again, this is a historic number as the 0171 range of numbers was abandoned in favour of 0207 numbers for central London in April 2000. In fact there had been a steady move to change number prefixes since 1966 and inner-London numbers had changed for 01 to 071 and 0171 before becoming the current 020 in 2000. A full history of telephone numbering systems is available on wikipedia - see All Figure Dialling.
