St Etheldreda's church in King Street, Norwich - the round tower
St Etheldreda's is one of nine churches that once stood on King Street, and one of the four that survived. The round tower dates from the 11th or 12th centuries and used to be higher. The south porch dates from the 15th century but the Norman doorways give evidence of this being a much older church. During an extensive restoration in the late 19th century carried out by the architect Edward Boardman the church was furnished in medieval style. The old box pews were replaced and the pulpit was placed on a stone base. The church closed when its last vicar died in 1961 and ten years later the building was derelict. When the consolidated parishes of St Peter Southgate (demolished) and St Etheldreda became part of the new parish of Parmentergate in 1973, the church of St Etheldreda was declared redundant and all furnishings were removed. Extensive repairs have been carried out since, and in 1980 the church became the home of the Saint Etheldreda Artist Studio > LinkExternal link. An upper floor, a roof light, toilets and a kitchen were provided. The studio is a registered charity and presently home to 12 artists. On the walls remain three monuments, two dating from the 19th century. The third > LinkExternal link commemorates William Johnson who died in 1611. This monument came from St Peter Southgate church in 1887.
