St Mark's church in Lakenham
St Mark's church > LinkExternal link was built in 1843 "for the poor and very populous" district of Lakenham by diocesan architect John Brown. Unusually, the church has a gallery > LinkExternal link. It contains the original boxed pews which in their day would have been rented out to the wealthier parishioners and trespassers would have been forcibly removed by the churchwardens. Apse and chancel > LinkExternal link were added in 1864. In 1910 there was a major restoration carried out under the London architect Temple Moore who designed some of England's most beautiful late 19th and early 20th century churches. The paitings and rood figures > LinkExternal link of the 1910 chancel screen were donated by the Bignold family. The figures were designed by Temple Moore and GF Bodley designed the paintings > LinkExternal link.
