Memories of the Laughing Buddha building, from Richard Hoare:

"The Laughing Buddha has, I believe, closed since 2010.

Back in the 1950s/60s this was "the" coffee and ice cream parlour. Known as The Silver Lounge it was upmarket. People travelled to there from far and wide and you often had to queue to get in. The outside was partly encased in a stainless steel facade to lend itself to its name. Inside it was like an American diner. Plush bench seats, bar stools, 50s Formica tops and polished stainless steel dome urns on the counter, spluttering clouds of steam, producing endless jugs of hot water. Huge ice cream sundaes and many bottles of sauce toppings to choose from. "
