Exposed imported limestone, Iron-Age camp
At the northern gateway to Midsummer Hill Iron-Age camp.
Walkers have worn away enough of the covering soil to expose the stone used by the builders of the Iron-Age camp for the revetments.
The Malvern Hills are made of ancient granite which is useless as a building material as pieces are naturally pyramidal in shape.
Realising this the Iron-Age civil engineers imported limestone from Coombegreen Common to the east or other quarries on the Herefordshire side of the hills.
Pieces of the flat stone found here were a geological curiosity to the Victorian geologists, but when the camp was excavated by Dr Stan Stanford in the late 1960's the mystery was solved.
Hundreds of tons of the flat sedimentary material had been brought up to the top of the Malvern Hills to turn the walls of the camp into an impressively gleaming sight when viewed from the other hills.SO7637 : Northern entrance, Midsummer Hill Iron-Age camp
