This was constructed in 1996 to enable the Rochdale canal to be re-opened.
Note the two sets of gates at the 'tail' of the lock; because of the depth of the lock (the deepest on the canal system) it is important to conserve water. So if the boats passing through are shorter than the maximum length allowed, only part of the lock needs to be used.
