The new lock, Sowerby Bridge
This was constructed in 1996 to enable the Rochdale canal to be re-opened. It is said to be the deepest lock in the country; it replaces two locks that were filled in when the A6039 Tuel Lane was diverted along the route of the then disused canal in the 1960s.
