Memorials and trees, St Mary's churchyard
Memorials and trees, St Mary's churchyard
This eastern end of the churchyard has become very informal: a scatter of memorials among a scatter of trees. Dominating the space is a large Indian Bean tree (Catalpa bignonioides) casting heavy shade. In the warm dry midsummer of 2010 the tree is covered in white flowers. The long dark pendulous bean pods will follow (looking rather like vanilla pods but unrelated: vanilla comes from an orchid). The boundary wall by the Tink-a-tank can be seen beyond the tree.
