St George Colegate > Link is the only medieval church still in religious use within the old Flemish quarter known as Norwich over the Water. As we see it today, the church was built in the 15th (nave) and 16th centuries. The north chapel was built by William Norwich - he was mayor in 1461. The church houses one of the largest collections of monuments, many of them the work of the 'Norwich School' > Link - Link - Link. The 16th century terracotta tomb chest > Link in the north chapel is of Robert Jannys, mayor 1517 and 1524. It is believed to have been made by the same craftsman who worked at Oxborough > Link and Wymondham. The pulpit > Link dates from the 18th century and is contemporary with the reredos > Link. The baptismal font > Link came from St Saviour and replaced an older font that was Norman and of Purbeck marble. The only coloured glass is contained in the east window > Link. It is believed to be a copy of Reynold's glass at New College in Oxford. It is badly deteriorated. For more detailed information read: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
