Pockthorpe St James' church, Norwich
Pockthorpe St James' church, Norwich
Pockthorpe, a small hamlet of Norwich, was united with St James in 1201 when it was acquired by the Cathedral and became a peculiar of the Dean and Chapter. This church was built around 150 years or so later. The tower is supported by two piers (NE and SE) forming three arches and only the west wall is solid. In 1743 the brick-built octagonal top was added. Eventually it became a puppet theatre which has been very successfully operating here for a number of years. The photograph was taken at 5:15 a.m. with the sun still low and before the morning traffic.
