Dragon Hall in King Street, Norwich
Dragon Hall in King Street, Norwich
The oak timbers for the construction of what came to be known as Dragon Hall were felled in the early 15th century. In its heyday the building served as a trading hall and its name is derived from the crown post roof on the first floor which is adorned by a beautifully carved dragon. After the death of its owner, Robert Toppes, in 1467, the hall was sold and divided up. During the 19th century it housed pubs, shops and businesses. In the early 20th century the site was occupied by run-down housing and combined with the general industrial decline the whole area was in danger of becoming derelict. Today Dragon Hall is a Grade 1 listed building under the care of the Norfolk and Norwich Heritage Trust. Free guided tours can be taken every Tuesday at 2pm.
