St Michael's church in Ormesby - medieval scratch dial
St Michael's church in Ormesby - medieval scratch dial
These medieval mass dials did not show the time of day as such. A simple twig, inserted in the hole and casting its shadow onto the scratched grooves surrounding it, told passersby when it was time for the next mass (service). Each one of these grooves stood for a mass held on that day. In medieval times it was not unusual for five, ten or even more masses held per day, every working day, and even more during so-called feast days. For a view of the church see > LinkExternal link.
