Originating in Wivilscombe, Somerset in 1807, Hancock's became a major Cardiff-based brewery that bought up breweries across South Wales until it was in its turn gobbled up by Bass Charrington in 1968. In 1999 that firm was taken over by Brains who still produce a Hancock's bitter.
