An inscription at Southdean Old Parish Church
This stone panel was placed at the partly restored west tower NT6309 : The remains of Southdean Old Parish Church by Hawick Archaeological Society in 1910. Scottish leaders assembled on this site before the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 and this is commemorated by this inscribed panel that reads as follows:-

SOUDEN KIRK HERE IN THE YEAR 1388. JAMES
EARL OF DOUGLAS AND THE OTHER SCOTTISH LEADERS
ASSEMBLED THEIR FORCES, MATURED THEIR PLANS, AND
BEGAN THE INVASION OF ENGLAND WHICH CULMINATED IN
THE BATTLE OF OTTERBURNE
