Abraham Lincoln looks out on Calton Hill
This statue of Lincoln bestowing freedom on a slave was unveiled in 1893 by the then US Consul in Edinburgh, who went by the appropriately Scottish-sounding name of Wallace Bruce. Six of the Scottish soldiers who fought in the American Civil War are buried here, in Old Calton Burial Ground. The monument in the background, on Calton Hill, is a memorial to the philosopher, Dugald Stewart.
