Remains of Elphinstone Tower
Remains of Elphinstone Tower
The solid remains of a tower-house from the middle of the 15th century. The blocks of dressed stone are of a particularly impressive size. In 1545, James Hepburn, earl of Bothwell, arrested the Lutheran preacher, George Wishart, at nearby Ormiston Hall and brought him here to be handed over to the custody of Cardinal David Beaton in person. After a night imprisoned in the tower, Wishart was taken first to Edinburgh, then Hailes Castle, then briefly to Edinburgh Castle and finally St. Andrews Castle where, after a spell in its 'bottle dungeon', he was publicly burnt. His cause was taken up by his followers, most notably John Knox who had acted as his sword-carrying bodyguard when Wishart preached in Lothian. Victorian prints show a large crack running down almost the entire length of the West wall, taken by some to be a sign of "God's displeasure at the incarceration of the Martyr". Mining subsidence caused further crumbling until, in the 1960s, the owner, arguing safety considerations, had the walls demolished to their present height.
