SJ2990 : Birkenhead North Station

taken 8 years ago, near to Wallasey, Wirral, Great Britain

Birkenhead North Station.
Birkenhead North Station.
Looking east, with unit No 507 002. Class 507 were originally 4-car trains intended for the Southern Region, where they ran for a while, but were soon transferred north for the Merseyrail network. However, they proved to be rather underpowered for the steeper gradients, so an unpowered trailer car was taken out of the formation, leaving them as 3-car units as at present. The unwanted trailers were incorporated into Class 455 units for the Southern Region, where they can still be seen on the South West Trains services out of Waterloo, recognisable because of their slightly different profile to the other cars in the unit.
