Reputedly, Hangman's Island takes its name from the Commonwealth period when Scillonians expressed their Royalist allegiance by plundering Dutch merchant ships. The Dutch threatened war and Cromwell sent Admiral Blake to subdue the islands. A Tresco pilot marooned Blake and his troops on Northwethel and the ensuing retribution saw several ardent Royalists swinging from gallows erected on the highest point.
