Sculptures of animals guarding an entrance on each side of the main gate clearly have a decorative function. Depending on the animal or bird depicted, they also carry many associations in a general sense. The detail of the pose, etc, adds further layers to the meaning of the symbolism. These swans don't look like pussy cats.
