This once very popular pub, on the B4380, has now been closed for over two years. It seems it is not beyond hope that it might one day re-open. The present building is late 19th century but of considerable historic interest, being built on the site of a mill mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Although that mill has long disappeared, there seems to have been a history of milling here over the centuries.

The pub has been a Grade II listed building since 1986. The text of the listing mentions that:- "The main interest of the building lies in the early C19 mill to rear (red brick with plain tile roof) and in the cast-iron undershot wheel of a former iron furnace below the wide round arch to the left. This is now connected to the gearing of the mill (see interior) but formerly activated the bellows of an iron furnace, which is said to have closed in 1760s.

Interior: the massive crown and pinion oak gearing of the corn mill, which turned the twin millstones (through which the grain was fed from an upper floor) is visible through a glass inspection chamber in a back room of the public house. A charcoal-fuelled blast furnace was built at Leighton in 1662 and is mentioned again in 1685 and 1698. There are also references to gunshot having been held here for the Royalist forces during the Civil War, after which a furnace at Leighton was 'slighted' by General Waller."
