The tower is topped with a laser-cut metal eagle, the symbol of St John, representing power, inspiration and the spreading of knowledge. The sides of the tower are cut with text from Bede's 'Ecclesiastical History of the English People'. The sculpture was created by William Pym and Sue Woolhouse in 2008.
