Lemington Gut is the former course of the River Tyne NZ1964 : Lemington Gut which had formed a long narrow meander about Lemington Point NZ1964 : Lemington Point and Gut. The river now flows in a wide curve on the far side of the new buildings of Newburn Riverside Business Park.
The Gut was created when, in 1876, the Tyne Commissioners cut a new channel in the river near Blaydon to improve navigation up river, and the entrance to Lemington Loop was cut off. Although, initially dredged to maintain access to Lemington Staiths, it gradually fell into disuse, and silted up LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
