This Lancaster bomber stood guard at the entrance to RAF Scampton (the "Dambusters" base) between 1960 and 1970, before becoming a prime exhibit at the RAF Museum, Hendon.

It is R5868, part of the first production batch of 57 aircraft ordered from Metropolitan-VIckers Ltd., Trafford Park, Manchester (originally ordered under Contract No. B108750/40 as Manchesters but completed as Lancasters), under Contract No. 982266/40 and built at the Mosley Road Works, Manchester. The inscription on the side of the aircraft is a quote from Hermann Goering "No enemy plane will fly over the Reich territory". R5868 flew 137 missions.
