The maypole, Barwick in Elmet
Barwick in Elmet's maypole is reputed to be the tallest in the country at 86 feet, making an astonishing site towering over the war memorial. It is made from a Scots Pine, grown in Finland, and is spliced into two pieces, so that it could be brought into the village. Periodically it has to be lowered for painting, a task traditionally done using ropes and the brawn of the villagers. Until fairly recently, after re-erection, a local man would shin up to the top to spin the 'fox', a task requiring considerable physical strength - and nerves of steel. Lately, however, nobody has been able, or willing, to undertake this task.
