Greenside Mine
Greenside Mine
Greenside Lead Mine was one of the most successful in the Lake District operating from the middle of the 18c to 1962. It is estimated that throughout its life the mine has produced a total of 2,400,000 tons of lead ore as well 2,000,000 ozs. of silver. Since the 1940s attempts have been made to encourage the growth of vegetation over the scars of these workings including the spraying of sewage in the 1950s. As can be seen these have only been partially successful.
