Strathcoil Monument
Strathcoil Monument
This is the monument to Dugald MacPhail, who in the mid-1800s wrote the lovely song, The Isle of Mull:

An t-Eilean Muileach, an t-eilean ghmhor,
An t-eilean grianach mun iath an sile;
Eilean buadhmhor nam fuar-bheann rda,
Nan coilltean uaine, 's cluaintean fsail.

The Isle of Mull is of isles the fairest
Of ocean's gems 'tis the first and rarest
Green grassy island of sparkling fountains
Of waving woods and high towering mountains.

The monument is not that easy to spot from the main road, but watch for the side road to Lochbuie and it's by the junction up on the left among the trees as you head for the Iona ferry.
