Heather management on Little Howden Moor
Above the Upper Derwent Valley, moorland heather is burnt or cut to provide a suitable habitat for grouse. Grouse prefer to eat the younger shorter shoots whilst the longer heather provides shelter. The patchwork of heather seen in the photograph was created through cutting.
