NS4683 : Western side of old enclosure

3 km from Croftamie, Stirling, Great Britain

Western side of old enclosure
Western side of old enclosure
The photograph shows part of the western wall of an enclosure, which was probably used to hold livestock (see below). The enclosure extends both north and south of the main east-west NS4683 : Track across Cameron Muir. In this and related photographs, I have shown only the part of the enclosure that lies to the south of the track, since the northern part is fenced off.

The line of the boundary can be seen here as a low ridge receding from the photographer's position, then curving to the right to meet the track (whose course is a darker green, with a fence alongside).

The enclosure is depicted on the first-edition 25-inch-to-the-mile OS map (1860), but only faintly; it was clearly no longer in use. It is probably an outlying part of the field system associated with East Cameron (NS4783 : The ruins of East Cameron); see LinkExternal link for that field system, which appears to have been bounded on the west by the Green Burn.

Located within the enclosure is a stone, possibly indicating the spot where herds or flocks were gathered to feed or drink: NS4682 : Stone within old enclosure.

See NS4682 : Southern side of old enclosure for another part of the boundary, to which part a smaller enclosure is attached: NS4682 : Southern side of small enclosure. At the south-western corner of the latter, a large grassy mound can be seen: NS4682 : Mound beside old enclosure.

All of these features are evident on the annotated satellite image (the link is given below).
Remains of an enclosure :: NS4682
This enclosure is part of a larger field system – LinkExternal link – which pre-dates the first-edition OS map. It was probably associated with the long-disappeared farmstead of East Cameron (see LinkExternal link for details). See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite image.
