TM4056 : Iken church across Troublesome Reach

Iken church across Troublesome Reach
Iken church across Troublesome Reach
The bend of the River Alde to the south of the church is called Troublesome Reach, presumably because it was troublesome to get out of. The naming's reminiscent of "Doubtful Sound" in New Zealand (South Island), so named by James Cook because, once entered, it would be doubtful if one could get out again, given the direction of the prevailing wind. In this photo, the low tide level has reduced the main channel to a small passage indeed. Nonetheless, this river carried important cargoes in the 19th century from nearby Iken Cliff (and Snape, upriver) - for example: barley malt out, coal in.
