This species is one of the smaller species of owl. Found throughout South America except in the Andes, the dryer Pacific lowlands, and the far south it is also found in southern Central America in Costa Rica and as far north as Panama. It is generally common in large parts of its range, occurring in a wide range of wooded habitats including those of city parks. It is quite variable in colour, though it is basically grey overall ranging to brown or rich rufous. It always has a distinctive blackish edge to the face and yellow eyes however.
