Wood ant nest on Copythorne Common
Wood ant nest on Copythorne Common
Wood ants build large conical mound nests like this, in woodland areas open to sunlight. This mound is exposed in a cleared area of the common (witness the surrounding stumps) which is unusual as it is not at all sheltered from the rain. This may not have been an issue for the ants as apart from some thunderstorms the previous day, the past few months have been very dry. At a guess, the large sticks resting on the mound have been left by curious passers by who just can't resist having a poke.
