Silver birch on Copythorne Common
Silver birch on Copythorne Common
A view east from the public footpath across the larger part of Copythorne Common, to the north of the M27 motorway cutting. Copythorne Common was once part of the New Forest's adjacent commons, but was annexed when the Forest's perambulation was fenced and gridded in the 1960s. Up until this time it was grazed by the New Forest commoners' stock, but when it was isolated the scrub grew back and pioneer species such as these silver birch sprang up. In more recent times the common has been grazed again, under private ownership, and some of the scrub has been cleared as part of a management programme to restore the original character of the common. I presume the conifers in the background were planted to screen the noise from the M27 motorway cutting (opened in 1972).
