View of the Alexandra Palace TV Transmitter from South Terrace
This TV transmitter atop Alexandra Palace was responsible for broadcasting the BBC's first TV shows and the UK's first high-definition television signals in 1936. It was temporarily used to jam German bombers' navigation systems during WWII and continued to be the BBC's main London transmitting centre until 1956. The antenna continued to be used for news broadcasts until 1969 and for the Open University until the early 1980s. The main London transmitter today is Crystal Palace. To this day, however, it is still used for local analogue television transmission and local commercial radio and DAB broadcasts. Taken from South Terrace looking north-northeast.
