Agassiz Rock, Blackford Glen
In 1840 Swiss Geologist Louis Agassiz noticed that this rock was polished and grooved by the passage of ice across its surface. His observation here marked the first recognition in the world of the presence of ancient ice sheets where now there is no ice and laid the foundation for the understanding of how ancient glaciers shaped the landscape. Due to its great geological importance the rock is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
