TM3659 : Farnham St Mary’s redundant church
taken 17 years ago, near to Farnham, Suffolk, England
Farnham St Mary’s redundant church
Heavily supported by buttresses this little church retains its slit windows but little else of real architectural interest remains. What remains of the rood screen is well traceried and still retains some traces of the original mediaeval paintwork. The box-pews were installed in the early part of the 19th c. and as in most cases ruin the internal appearance of the church by creating divisions between them and us. The pulpit was built and installed at the same time and matches the pews as at nearby Benhall. The font is a modern replica of a 13th c. style, probably a copy of the original. The church, although appearing to be well maintained and in good order is now disused and has been declared redundant, as was Stratford St Andrew on the opposite bank of the River Alde which is now a private house.
